Explaining compound interest

This article can also be found here.

"The most powerful force in the universe is compound interest." - Albert Einstein

Basically, it's the your original money can make interest. If the interest rate is high enough and the money sits for a long enough time, pretty soon the interest you made can make interest. And this is the power of compound interest.

Look at this way... let's say that you save $1000 and put it away right away. Let's say that (to make things simple), that $1000 earns 10% every single year... here is how much you would have after a certain amount of year:

Start - $1,000
Year 5 - $1,464
Year 10 - $2,357
Year 20 - $6,115
Year 30 - $15,863
Year 40 - $41,144

So you can see the great power of compound interest. In the first 20 years of that investment, you would earn about $5000, which is nice but its not as good as it could be. However, during the next 20 years the money gains about $35,000. This is just for a one-time $1000 investment.

So this is the power of compound interest... let it work for you, and it can do wonders. Remember, the longer the time period, the more compound interest can kick in, and the better off you'll be.

Why you should have a spending limit for Christmas

This article can also be found here.

As we grow older and more mature, most of us take the most joy during the Christmas season in giving great gifts. It is a great feeling to be able to give a gift that is needed and appreciated, and will be loved by the recipient. There is no better feeling around this time of year than in seeing that big smile on someone's face after they open a great gift.

On one hand, this is a good thing and a good attitude to have. We grow up looking forward to receiving gifts, and we grow out of that unselfishness and see the joy in giving to others. Sometimes, however, this can be a bad thing. This can be harmful if we go too far in getting people great gifts, because it can cause us to spend more money than we can really afford. If you are going deep into debt and having trouble paying your bills because of your Christmas shopping, you are taking things a bit too far.

That's why it is important to have a budget around the Christmas season, so that you can have a spending limit for the gifts that you buy. That way, you can keep better track of how much you're spending, and how much you're able to reasonably afford to spend. It's great to get excellent gifts for people you care about, but it's even better to get them when you know you can afford them. Plus, this way you don't have to worry about how much you're spending... if you have a spending limit set up, you will know that you are OK as long as you spend less than that amount.

I am sure that the people who are receiving the gifts are happy with this too. After all, would you want to get a great gift, only to later find out that the person is in a bad shape financially because of it? I would think that most people would be happy to receive a lesser gift if they knew it wouldn't hamper you financially. That way both the giver and receiver of the gift can be happy.

Christmas is a great time of year, but it can also be dangerous financially if you are not careful or if you do not properly plan for it. Because everyone wants to find that perfect, special gift, they have the tendency to spend more than they can afford on it. They break the bank, and wind up hurting for it after the Christmas season is over once they get their bills and bank statement. So be responsible and set a spending limit in your Christmas spending. You will thank yourself for it later.

How to cut your food bill

This article can also be found here.

The food bill can be a tough one to swallow each week. Food is a necessity, and there are not many ways that you can scrimp on it, because it will have a direct impact on much of your life. However, there are some ways that you can cut the food bill down a bit so that it is more manageable.

One way is to use coupons. Search for them in your local newspaper, online, or maybe even at the store itself. These can be nice little money savers, especially if you find any items that you were going to buy anyway. Sometimes that can be difficult, but it can be worth the effort. It's very easy and can help you cut the food bill. You can also look for discounts among stores, or try to search out which store will have the same product for cheaper than the rest.

Another way is to make a list beforehand - If you make a list with exactly what you need, you should be able to get in, get what you need, and get out. So make a list of everything that you need beforehand, and don't stray from that list. Have tunnel vision, so to speak. You may be tempted to buy something that you think is a good deal, but if you have your list and have decided you don't really need it, then you should avoid it. This is probably the biggest thing that kills a budget for groceries... you see lots of other things that you think are good deals, and you buy them even if you don't need them.

You can also buy some generic items. Generally, generic goods will be about the same quality as brand name goods, but at a much cheaper price. So, unless it's something where the brand name is really important, you are probably safe buying generic, and it will save you a good deal of money. Plus, in some cases, you might even find you like the generic better! That has definitely happened for me.

Lastly, don't go grocery shopping when you're hungry! Anytime I go when I'm hungry practically everything looks really good. Then later, when I'm not so hungry, I look at what I've bought and wonder... why? So don't go grocery shopping when you're hungry... because then everything looks good, and then you're bound to spend a little more money than you may have wanted to.

So these are just a few small tips to follow that can help make things easier when you're buying groceries on a budget. If you do these things, and use a little bit of common sense, it will make grocery shopping a little easier, a little cheaper, and that will be very good for your budget.

Why can't Americans save money?

This article can also be found here.

It is a sad fact of American life - many people just can't seem to save money. There are many reasons for this, and many things that people can be done, but they just can't bring themselves to do it. This is leading to a lot of problems of unhappiness, as financial difficulties (which comes from not being able to save money) can be one of the biggest stressors in life, leading to unhappiness and unfulfillment with life and with many relationships. One of the biggest reasons for divorce (which is far too rampant in our society) is concerns and stresses about money.

One of the biggest reasons that some people just can't seem to save is because they simply have the wrong mindset. They think they "need" to have everything they really want, and then they spend more money than they should. In essence, they try to "keep up with the Joneses," either on a larger scale or a smaller scale. Many people feel entitled to have things, so they buy them whether they can afford to or not. This means that they're spending money that they should be saving, causing them to fall deeper into debt.

Another reason is people seem to have no vision or focus on the future, or have the idea that they can just worry about that later. With such a narrow vision, they don't see the harm in spending their money on luxuries rather than saving for retirement, or saving to set up and emergency fund. As the saying goes, the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, the second best time is now. Saving money is not something you can put off, because you are wasting time when you do that, time where the money could be growing.

So that is why some people can't seem to save, for the most part they are not disciplined enough. They spend their money on things that they can't afford, or they just charge it, which puts them into a deeper hole. If they would just save the money that they needlessly spend on things they don't need, well, that would solve a lot of money problems that they might have. If people had fewer money problems, that would allow them to live happier, fulfilled lives. As money can be one of the biggest causes of stress, if people can save money and overcome that, we as a society can begin to grow.

Best ways to save money

This article can also be found here.

For a variety of reasons, many people have a very difficult time of saving money. This leads to all sorts of financial problems, as debt can be a huge strain on life and hamper your ability to be truly happy. Indeed, one of the biggest causes for divorces is money. Worrying about money can cause a lot of stress and unhappiness. As the saying goes, "the best thing about having money is not having to worry about money."

This is why saving money is so important, and having the ability to save money can play a big role in determining your happiness. There are many ways to make it easier to save money. But above all, I've found that one of the best ways to save money is to make things automatic.

What I mean by this is to have a portion of your paycheck automatically taken out and put into a savings account (and part to a 401k!), or even just a set amount taken each month automatically from your bank account and put into a savings account. Why does this work so well? There are a few reasons.

For one thing, after a while, you don't even notice the money is not there. If it's just taken out, it'll just be so normal to you that you won't even consider it like money that you could be getting to spend. It just becomes natural to have it taken out. In my case, I have some money automatically taken out of my checking account and put in an IRA. Since it happens every month without me having to do anything, I barely even notice when it happens. But since it is happening every month, that money continues to grow and grow, adding up over time.

Another reason is that you're just saving little by little. This is another reason you won't notice it... if you're just constantly saving little by little, you won't notice it or miss it. But that's the secret to investing. If you do it right, little by little can add up to a lot over time. Which is why it's so nice.

So that's my best tip for saving money... make it automatic. It'll be accumulating little by little over time, and can get to the part where you don't even notice that the money is taken out. It can be a very effective method of saving, and saving money can lead to a happier, more fulfilling life, because it allows you not to have to worry about, leaving you to take up more fulfilling activities.

Ways to reduce living expenses

This article can also be found here.

During tough economic times like the world has been facing over the past couple of years, it is important to do anything possible to try and cut down on living expenses. Sometimes these methods can seem silly, and that they are not likely to save very much money, but it is important to keep in mind that every little bit helps, and that saving a little bit of money in a lot of ways can eventually add up to a lot of savings.

The first thing to try and cut down on is heating and cooling expenses. If you do not have a programmable thermostat, consider buying one, because that can save you money in the long run. In the short run, consider an extra sweater or blanket instead of turning up the heat. In the summer, open a window instead of cranking up the AC. If you are gone during the day, turn down the thermostat so that the heater isn't running on high all day while nobody is home. Again, turn it down at night so that it isn't running so high while everybody is sleeping. These are all little things that can help cut down on your electricity bills, which can add up to some nice savings over time.

Groceries are obviously another big expense, because everyone has to eat. Here you can try to search for and cut out coupons. It's not the most fun activity, but it can add up to some very nice savings. Also consider buying in bulk for items that you use a lot. Things will be cheaper in bulk, so again there could be a little higher upfront cost, but it will save you money in a little longer time frame,

If you drive to work, you could try to see if you are able to carpool with anyone. This will allow you to save money on gas and build up work camaraderie with a co-worker, which could make that part of the day more enjoyable. It's also important to try and seek out entertainment activities that do not cost money. Many people have expensive hobbies, like going to a lot of movies or going out to drinks. These expenses can add up very quickly, and they most likely do not add a lot of value to your life, meaning you will be able to replace them with less expensive options. Search out for free entertainment options in your local area, and that can significantly cut down on expenses.

There are a lot of little ways that you can cut down on your living expenses, and everything will help a bit. Though it might seem like you are not saving very much, a lot of little expenses can add up to a lot of big savings over the long run, which can help you successfully reduce your living expenses.

No matter how many you are shopping for, buying groceries will usually be one of your biggest expenses. Even if you are just buying them for yourself, it will likely be a large expense. That is why it is important to do whatever you can to cut down the cost of groceries. Fortunately, there are a few different things you can do that will help cut down your expenses if you are buying groceries on a budget.

This is probably the biggest thing that kills a budget for groceries... you see lots of other things that you think are good deals, and you buy them even if you don't need them.

- Search for discounts - This is pretty obvious, but look around at multiple stores, and look around for coupons to make the things you have to buy a little cheaper. If you can do this on a larger scale it can make a huge difference on the amount that you pay for groceries. Coupons can save you a lot of money, especially if you have a lot of little ones.

- Buy generic - Generally, generic goods will be about the same quality as brand name goods, but at a much cheaper price. So, unless it's something where the brand name is really important, you are probably safe buying generic, and it will save you a good deal of money. So don't go grocery shopping when you're hungry... because then everything looks good, and then you're bound to spend a little more money than you may have wanted to.

Benefits of Online Banking

This article can also be found here.

I have been using online banking a lot more over the past year, and I have found it to be very nice and very convenient. Some things that make it stick out:

- Interest rates are often higher - Online banks don't really have as many expenses as regular brick & mortar banks, meaning they can afford to give out higher interest rates on deposited money. For example, the interesting on a savings account I have at a brick & mortar bank is less than 1%. The interest I am receiving right now at ING Direct is 4.5%. Obviously that's an enormous difference.

- Easy to use - Make bill payments, automatically transfer money, online customer service, etc. With online banks, everything is usually easier and more convenient to use.

- Safe - I'm not saying that regular banks aren't safe, but I've heard a lot of people get worried about using online banks because they don't think they're safe. In reality, that's not true at all. With different security codes and other protections, the biggest threat to your account security is someone watching you type your password and other information. It really is very secure.

So with all of these advantages and perks of online banking, I'm not sure why it isn't even more popular... it's definitely something I use right now, and will be using a lot in the future.
